Columbia Band Wins State Championship!
The rock rhythms and beautiful choruses of The Who’s rock opera “TOMMY” soared into the stands last Saturday as the Columbia Central high school “Golden Eagles” marching band took to the gridiron one last time at the 2007 Michigan Competitive Band Associations State Championship finals contest held at the Motor City’s Ford Field. The moment of truth came during the Flight IV awards ceremony at the end of the evening. You could hear a pin drop as judges tallied up the points, and the announcers voice began reading the final scores of each of the 10 bands performing. Hopes and dreams of a big win soon turned to reality as band members, parents, other fans and spectators cheered with excitement as the Columbia band learned they had taken the first place state championship with a score of 83.80, the highest score of all four of their fall seasons competitions.

In addition to winning the coveting first place trophy, the band also captured awards for “Best General Effect” and “Best Marching”. Work on the marching show that started as early as June of this year and long hours put in by students, staff and parent volunteers were rewarded during the awards ceremony as a special white banner was given the band in honor of all their achievements. Band director Joe Folts was both happy and proud as each band member was also given a special red, white and blue “Olympic style” medal for all their hard work and a job well done.
